Sustainability is embedded in MIZLEK FOODS’ business strategy. First and foremost, MIZLEK FOODS’ third business value out of five values advocates for a sustainable universe. It is our commitment to contribute towards sustainable use of resources, conserve the environment and embrace sustainable livelihoods of the people within our sphere of business operations. Secondly, in developing and mapping out MIZLEK FOODS short and long-term strategy, sustainability appears in three areas of our strategic planning, namely, internal and external environmental analysis, short-medium and long term strategic objectives and under risk management.

The recognition of sustainability in our core business strategy signifies MIZLEK FOODS’ embrace of the significance of sustainability for the long-term growth of the business. We have recognised sustainability in both the long-term existence of the business within the sector in which we operate and protection of the environment on which we operate. Our understanding of sustainability is drawn from the landmark definition of sustainable development by the World Commission on Environment and Development’s (the Brundtland Commission) in 1987 that defined sustainable development as the “Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”.

In further clarifying our understanding of sustainability in the context of our business operations and the broader environment in which we operate, we have classified the key aspects of sustainability into the three well known integrated categories, namely People, Planet and Profit also known as the “triple bottom line”. The three “Ps” are also known as the Social, Environment and Economic aspects of sustainability. Drawing from this analysis, it becomes clear to us that while we pursue profit (Profit/ Economic) as a business, we need to consider the impact that our business has in the environment (Planet/ Environment) in which we operate and recognise the significance of all stakeholders (People/ Social) that are affected by and/ or affect our business operations. Essentially, we understand sustainable business development to involve the application of sustainability principles to business operations.

Categorising these three aspects enable us as the management of MIZLEK FOODS to customise and organize all aspects of our business operations into relevant categories. The adoption of this integrated model of sustainability ensures that all areas of MIZLEK FOODS’ business operations across the entire business value chain are integrated into the entire model of sustainability.
